Majestas
Domini
This single vellum leaf was originally part of a psalter, or collection
of psalms and prayers, of which only five leaves have survived -- including
one housed at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. It was painted
in the southern German city of Augsburg, c. 1260, in the style known
as Zackenstil, identifiable by the careful rendering of the
drapery. The page is illuminated on both sides; on the reverse is
a depiction of the Ascension of Christ.
