Sons increase
hockey fund honoring their late father
The George J.
Norberg '39 Memorial Scholarship is soon to become a full-tuition
hockey scholarship, thanks to a substantial commitment from Norberg's
sons.
The scholarship was founded five years ago by Joseph Norberg '68
and William Norberg '75, with contributions from their brother Robert
'75. Its current value is about $83,000. With their recent pledge,
the Norberg brothers will raise the total of the fund to $380,000,
making it the largest hockey scholarship at BC. At that level, the
fund will cover full tuition for one hockey player each year.
"My brothers and I felt that a hockey scholarship would be
a fitting tribute to our father," said William Norberg. "By
increasing its value, we hope to expand his legacy and help Boston
College attract student athletes who will continue the University's
wonderful hockey tradition."
George Norberg played hockey at Boston College and was a strong
supporter of the University's athletic and academic programs. Many
members of the Norbergs' extended family have attended Boston College.
Joseph Norberg played hockey for Boston College High School, where
he was a teammate of Jerry York '67, now the head coach of men's
ice hockey.
"We're very appreciative of the interest the Norberg family
has for BC hockey, and very grateful for their support," York
said. "Their further generosity will really help us continue
to attract the best student-athletes to the program while freeing
up financial-aid funds for other students in need."
